Zdeněk (Dennis) Verňák a Hela

Před pár lety jsem navštívila krajany v Kalifornii a napsala o tom knížku Všechny moje Ameriky I. Cali.

Letadlem jsem přistála v San Francisku a byla jsem srdečně uvítána mou americkou zastupitelkou Želkou Živnou. A hned další báječní lidé, s kterými jsem se tam setkala, byli manželé Zdeněk a Hela Verňákovi. Vzali mne na své oblíbené přímořské místo a samozřejmě i.na oběd. A pořád jsme si povídali. O nich, o Sokole, kde jsou velmi činní, o mé práci s Českými dialogem, s kalendáři a s knihami. Všechno se neslo ve veselém duchu, prostě Verňákovi, moc milá dvojka. Zdeněk mne také upozornil, že má poblíž mé chatičky na Slapech, na Kocábě příbuzné a že Hela Šonková u mne nakoupí kalendáře a knížky a pošle mu je. Ano, to funmgovalo, časem jsem poznala další milou osobu jménem Hela. A těšili jsme se všichni, že až Verňákovi letos v létě přijedou do ČR, setkáme se právě na Kocábě. nebo u mé chaty. Bohužel, to už se nestane. Zdeněk a Hela na nás koukají z nebeských výšin (jestli tedy koukají a nebaví se tam jinak, však byli oba přístupní všem legráckám). Ani jsem nestačila na webu Českého dialogu úvést Zdeňka jako dopisovatele ze San Franciska, což jsem mu slibovala před nedávnem, když mi posílal všelijaké zajímavosti ze Sokola i ze San Franciska vůbec.

ZDENĚK a HELENA VERŇÁKOVI

Česká a slovenská komunita kolem San Franciského zálivu se 8. července rozloučila se Zdeňkem a Helenou Verňákovými.

Byl to pro všechny smutný letní den.  Zdeněk a Hela  se účastnili mnoha společenských a sportovních akcí, vždy vlídní a usměvaví, ochotni pomoci, přátelé jaké si jen každý může přát.

Zemřeli při automobilové nehodě, když se vraceli domů po krásném dni stráveném na pláži. Zdeňkovi bylo 83 let, Hele 79. Oba byli v pensi, Zdeněk původně pracoval jako letecký mechanik, Hela jako zdravotní sestra. Vloni v listopadu oslavili šedesáté výročí svatby.

Zdeněk a Hela byli mnohaletí členové Sokola, Zdeněk byl po mnoho období  vicepresidentem. Na každoročním sokolském pikniku, kde se scházejí Češi a Slováci od nejstarších Sokolů az po hordy dětí z české školy, se Zdeněk staral o grill, v klobouku a zástěře stál uprostřed hemžení, známá a spolehlivá postava, ke které se sbíhali všichni.

Zdeněk a Hela pocházeli ze Zbraslavi, ve Spojených Státech prožili více než půl století. Zdeněk, založením myslitel, filosof a český písmák psal a publikoval v češtině i angličtině a nikdy neztratil kontakt s kulturním děním ve staré vlasti, mimo jiné i prostřednictvím Českého Dialogu. Podporoval také Libri Prohibiti, společnost, která sbírá exilovou a samizdatovou literaturu, a mnohokrát pro ni našel cenné přírůstky.

Dům v San Mateu, kde žili od osmdesátých let, a který dostavěli a zvelebili, je prázdný , stejně jako zahrada, pěstovaná a ošetřovaná po léta. Zdeněk i Hela byli zahradníci k pohledání a dovedli svůj kousek země proměnit v ráj na zemi, kde byla opravdu radost posedět.

Říkat, že nám budou scházet je zbytečné. Už teď nám scházejí, chtěli jsme se s nimi podělit o dojmy z letního cestováni, ze sletu Amerického Sokola, vyměňovat si sklizeň a sazeničky, posedět v jejich oblíbené rybářské hospodě na pobřeží Pacifiku.

Sbohem, Zdeňku a Helo, máme vás pořád rádi.
