The first private university in the Czech Republic

After a successful accreditation process and state permit, The Jan Amos Komenský College started to function in 2001 and its first students commenced their studies in Prague at Malá Stran campus.

The change meant especially enhancing of prestige both in the Czech Republic as well as abroad. As the rector doc. Chaloupka noted: “based upon these measures, the university has been creating a new organizational structure which significantly contributes to better conditions of functioning and development of the school. That is above all reflected in students’ satisfaction and in particular in the increase of number of students. Such status also brings responsibility towards students, teachers as well as the public.”

The Jan Amos Komenský University is an Individual Associate member of the European University Association (EUA) and participates in national as well as international research, development and innovative projects in the area of pedagogical sciences, human recourse development, educational methods, form and technologies, communication and media and arts (audio-visual production, scenic and media studies). We support academic mobility as well as student study abroad. The university is a holder of the Erasmus Extended University Charter and cooperates with many European universities.

The university offers full range of university education: bachelor’s, master’s and engineer’s, as well as doctoral in both the presence (daily) and combined (distance) forms. The portfolio of the university includes also an original MBA programme which has obtained the prestigious FIBAA accreditation.

At presence the following fields of study are offered:

Bachelor´s (Bc.): Adult Education, Special Education, Social and Mass Communication, European Economic and Public Administration Studies, Tourism Management, Business Law, Managerial Studies-Human Resources Management, Audiovisual Communication and Production, Scenic and Media Studies.

Master´s (MA): Andragogy, Special Education, Social and Mass Communication, European Economic and Public Administration Studies.

The university also offers a possibility of rigorous state examination (PhDr.) and also accepts students into doctoral studies (Ph.D.) of special education.

There is also a great demand for the managerial studies MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, in which the graduates of this area are awarded a professional degree of MBA. The MBA programme is currently considered the qualification standard of top managers in Czech and foreign companies. It is especially designed for chief executives and managers with practical experience, and it focuses on the topic of “Human resources management and the European Union.” Students therefore have the opportunity to build their high profile career in the management positions on various levels, predominantly within the countries of the EU. The graduates of this programme become top experts on human resources management in European institutional, economic and legal environment.

The university also provides a great variety of certified courses as part of life-long learning. The credits gained in these courses are recognized in further university studies. In the field of language learning the university issues internationally recognized language certificates TELC.

There are more than 8000 students at Jan Amos Komenský University Prague in accredited study programmes and over 500 other students in life-long learning programmes, which makes UJAK the largest private establishment of higher education in the country. Within the framework of educational support, UJAK publishes lecture materials and other interesting spe cialized publications. On the premises of the university there is a modern library with free internet access and a bookshop with coursebooks. At the Jan Amos Komenský University Prague there are students coming from different parts of the Czech Republic, and also from abroad. Foreign students will surely welcome the possibility of accommodation in the vicinity of the university premises, which will be provided in the near future.

During their studies, students can get involved in national and international scientific projects and research projects in the areas of pedagogical sciences, human resources development, educational methods, forms and technologies, or communication and media.

UJAK has established international contacts with both European and non-European universities. More than 30 partner institutions in the EU as well as in Kazakhstan, Turkey, Vietnam, or China co-operate with UJAK in the fields of academic mobility and research and development projects.

To ensure better availability of the university, there are four regional centres, which are situated in Obrataň, Česká Lípa, Starý Hrozenkov, and Frýden Místek. These regional centres were established for practical reasons, in order to make the consultation offices accessible for students in the vicinity of their homes, so that that students who have jobs, wouldn’t need to travel to Prague. To make the high quality university education even more accessible, the UJAK University is developing distance studies with modern technologies support.
