Exhibition of Artist Jan Zrzavy (1890-1977)
This year commemorates 30 years from the death of this very important Czech painter and graphic artist of modern times. His first exhibition took place in 1912, followed by others in 1918 and 1920, and many more. During the 1950’s he became a moral support for those younger artists who did not embrace the political situation of his country. He stayed in the background and did not exhibit.
In addition to being gifted as a visual artist he also showed great talent as a writer and actor. In his paintings he mastered many forms - portraits, figure compositions, landscapes, still - lives, religious themes, symbolism, etc. He admired many great artists, especially Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt and – among his contemporaries- the cubist Bohumil Kubista.
The exhibition is quite extensive including his most famous paintings, his many other graphic works, pencil studies and sketches and a film about his life and work. The exhibition is located in the Valdstejnska jizdarna and will be open until September 16, 2007.Olga Szymanská
