KAREL HLADIK (1912-1967) was a most gifted and important Czech sculptor of the 20-th century . This year marks the 95th anniversary of his birth. In the years 1940-47 he studied under Jan Lauda at the Industrial Arts Academy in Prague and with Karel Pokorny at the Academy of Expressive Arts where he later became professor of sculpture. He studied sculpture also in Hungary, Greece, France, Poland, Germany, Austria, and most often in Italy (Manzu and Greco). He exhibited both at home and abroad, and took part in at least 20 exhibitions in various countries of Europe such as in Italy, Germany and France. There is a permanent exhibition of his works in the town of Rychnov nad Kneznou. Eduard Goldstucker said about him: ”His artistic honesty impressed me always: unfortunately I only met him in person very few times. Yet I found him to be a beautiful and very kind human being.“
