Her Czech grandfather was in Resistance Movement during the war and later he restored a famous Irish glassworks. She stands for a seat in European Parliament.

DUBLIN – Apparently the Czech Republic could have more sympathizers in Strasbourg than 24 Czech MEPs. Ivana Bacikova, 35 years old, is the candidate of Irish Labour Party who has her roots in Světlá nad Sázavou. „If I am elected, I shall be very pleased to contact with Czech deputies," Bacikova says.

She teaches law at Trinity College in Dublin. She can´t speak Czech but except English she speaks Irish, Frensh and Spanish. Last time she was in the CR five years ago when she was leading a summery course of European law at Law College in Prague.

Her grandfather was from South Bohemia. After learning in Prague he married and the newlyweds moved to Světlá nad Sázavou. Their four children were born there – one of them was Bacikova´s father. The grandfather, who worked as a boss of local glassworks, was in Czechoslovak Ressistance Movement during WWII. At the end of the war he was captured and imprisoned by Nazis.

After his liberation he decided to leave with his family for Ireland because he had read about a conclusion of famous glassworks in Waterford. He brought several workers to Ireland too and with them he restored the production of the factory. Nowadays Waterford´s glass is one of the most well-known products of Irish export.

Bacikova herself grew up in Cork and at the age of 14 she moved to Dublin, where she studied law. Since her studies she has been interested in politics. In 1989 she was chairman of local student union. Then she practiced law and has been engaged in the fields of human rights; she is known for her reluctant attitude to war in Iraq. On web pages Bacikova is introduced as „socialist and feminist candidate." In case, she is elected she wants to work on social and human rights as well as „democratic deficit of EU."
